China's intelligent water meter has great potential for development and industry leaders will take the lead

China Instrument Network Instrumentation Depth At the seminar on the application of Internet of Things in the smart service public sector held recently, China Telecom, Shenzhen Water Group and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. jointly released the White Paper on the NB-IoT Smart Water Meter. Explained the action plan and implementation plan of the three parties in the field of NB-IoT smart water meters, and looked forward to the development of smart water services in the future.

The word smart city is believed to be no stranger to us. Smart cities are mainly composed of several links such as “data collection, storage, and analysis”. Smart cities can be said to be the direction of the development of the international community. Although each country has a variety of styles, it is inseparable from these core technologies. To make these technologies a reality, it is inseparable from the support of instrumentation.

One of the core construction points of smart cities is wisdom water. Smart Water uses smart water meters and data collection equipment to sense the running status of urban water supply and drainage systems in real time, and organically integrates water management and water supply and drainage facilities in a visual manner to form the “Urban Water Utility Network”. Smart water meter data collection capabilities and other technical levels are the basic conditions for the accumulation of large amounts of data, provide a basis for the construction and implementation of smart water services, and at the same time play an invaluable role in building smart cities.

Since the invention of the first water meter in Britain in the 19th century, the water meter industry has a history of more than one hundred years. At present, the total global water meter demand is about 100 million units a year. The main producers are Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Poland, the Czech Republic, China, Japan and the United States. China has also become one of the largest water meter manufacturers in the world. However, from the perspective of subdivision, China's water meter industry mainly focuses on low-end products such as mechanical water meters. In the field of smart water meters, domestic companies have a relatively small share of global market share. According to statistics, currently, the penetration rate of smart water meters in China is about 20%, and the annual sales volume is 15 million units. The corresponding market size is only 5 billion yuan, and the technology, management level and development trend of smart water meter products still lag behind.

The development of the smart meter industry is inseparable from the establishment of the standard system and the advancement of relevant standards. However, in China, the meter industry is different from the meter industry. The nation’s water system is rather fragmented. Without the unified management of corporate bodies like the national grid, the technical power is not as strong as the power industry, so that there is still no unified technical route and standard.

In addition, there are currently more than 600 water meter manufacturers in the country, while those engaged in smart water meters are far smaller than the above figures, and the output is expected to be only about 10 or more 100,000 units. The major manufacturers include Xintian Technology, Sanchuan Stock, and Chongqing Smart. Water meter and so on. The high barriers to investment in R&D of smart meters have made it impossible for ordinary meter companies of small workshops to continuously update their technology, which is also one of the problems facing the development of smart water meters in China.

According to the forecast of experts, under the background of the wide application of NB-IoT communication technology, smart water meters will rapidly develop at a growth rate of 28%. It is expected that the market size of smart water meters will exceed 40 billion yuan in the next five years, and the scale will exceed 170 in 2020. Billion, the market is huge.

It is believed that with the continuous improvement of technology and the acceleration of the smart city construction process, the smart water meter industry in China will develop steadily. Due to the industrial characteristics of smart water meters, the industry may enter into an oligopolistic competition situation. Large-scale water meter companies with capital and technological advantages are expected to come to the fore, and with the rapid development of the industry, enjoy a more favorable growth environment.
