Japan Develops New Techniques for Bio-ethanol from Seaweed

Tohoku University in Japan recently cooperated with Tohoku Electric Power Co., Ltd. to develop a new technology that can extract bioethanol from marine algae such as Sargassum esculentum and kelp.
The research team cut the seaweed and added enzymes to dissolve it into a slimy mash, and then added their newly developed special yeast to ferment. About two weeks later, about 200 ml of ethanol can be extracted per kilogram of seaweed. This method of manufacture also applies to kelp.
Previously, when Japan used seaweed to make bioethanol, it needed to dry the seaweed to a powder and consume energy. New technologies could save a lot of energy. Not only that, since no harmful substances are used in the manufacturing process, the remaining solution is also very simple to handle.
