CEP Says September Air Cargo Fuel Surcharge Declined
According to the latest analysis from CEP-Research, with the exception of Dutch TNT, the fuel surcharges for international air express freight in Europe and the United States have declined in September after experiencing a mixed trend in August. In Europe, fuel surcharges for FedEx and UPS fell from 13.5% in August to 13% in September. DHL also lowered its fuel surcharges in Europe, from 13.0% in August to 12.5% in the period from September 5 to October 2. In contrast, the fuel surcharge for TNT courier companies in Europe increased from 16% in August to 16.5% in September, and the fuel surcharge for TNT in the UK also rose from 9% in August to 9.5%. In the United States, FedEx, UPS, and DHL reduced the fuel surcharge for international air express freight (domestic and cross-border) from 7.5% in August to 7% in September. In Asia, all courier operators lowered their fuel surcharge rates in September. DHL’s fuel surcharges fell from 17% in August to 16.5% in September. UPS's fuel surcharges fell from 16% in August to 15.5% in September. TNT's fuel surcharges also rose from 14% in August. It fell to 13.5% in September. FedEx's fuel surcharges are different in different countries in Asia. In Singapore and Hong Kong, FedEx's fuel surcharges have dropped from 11% in August to 10.5% in September. The fuel surcharge rate for air express in September reflects the level of oil prices two months ago. The four large express operators calculated the fuel surcharge tariff based on the price index reflecting the previous month's oil price level, and announced the results of the calculation in advance. This caused a two-month time lag between the price of oil and the level of fuel surcharges.
