An assistant professor at the University of Maryland stated: “This new method of treating wood makes it 12 times stronger and 10 times stronger than natural wood. This kind of wood can be used in automobiles, airplanes, buildings, and any place where steel is used.
The new wood processing involves two steps. The first step involves the partial removal of lignin, gum between wood cells and hemicellulose from the natural wood by a boiling process in an aqueous mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfite.
Subsequent hot-pressing results in complete collapse of the cell walls and fully densified natural wood using highly uniform cellulose nanofibers.
The team measured the mechanical properties of dense wood and found it strong and tough.
The University of Maryland said: "It's as strong as steel, but it is six times lighter, 10 times more energy-hungry than natural wood, and can even be bent and formed at the beginning."
