The World Automotive Steel Union stated that regulations that control automobile emissions should cover the entire cycle of recycling from the production of raw materials to the end of the life cycle. According to Sestenbrook, the project's director of the coalition, if only focusing on emissions assessments from vehicles, car manufacturers will be encouraged to use alternative materials such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber to reduce vehicle weight and reduce fuel consumption. However, the carbon emissions from the production of these materials are 5 to 20 times more than steel, which will increase the greenhouse gas emissions of the car throughout its life cycle.

Brooke said that with the application of electric vehicles in the future, only regulations that focus on carbon emissions from cars will be difficult to apply.

The alliance has also released a research result of a steel project for automobiles, which proves the possibility that steel-manufactured cars will reduce their life cycle emissions. The project, “Future Steel Cars,” focuses on the design of electric vehicles with all-steel structural bodies. The body weight can be reduced by 35%, and the total life cycle emissions can be reduced by nearly 70%.
