SENER launches innovative helmet-mounted display

With the implementation of the Spanish SENER innovation strategy, the company has made good progress in virtual reality (VR) shipbuilding applications. After developing the second-generation viewer FORAN FVIEWER VR for virtual navigation through 3D models, the company recently introduced new applications on helmet-mounted displays (HMDs).

At the recent FORAN User Conference in Toledo, SENER and Ingevideo jointly demonstrated two different innovative approaches to virtual reality. The first is a virtual reality room with a 6m x 3m projector (2048 x 1080 resolution) and Intersense's IS900 ultrasonic tracking system. The second alternative method is the HMD interactive model using an optical tracking scheme. Both environments are used for navigation of ship 3D models.

HMD allows users to view and interact with the 3D simulation environment. Shown is a head-mounted display for training and simulation applications, the SX111 model produced by the Near Vertical Incident Sky Wave (NVIS) manufacturer. It is worth mentioning that it can cover a wide angle of 102 degrees horizontal and 64 degrees vertical with a resolution of SXGA (1280x1024).
