The development of the regional economy has made intra-Asian trade increasingly attractive. This is especially true for container shipping in Asia, which is expected to grow fastest in the world in the next few years. Therefore, Germanischer Lloyd's Register (Location) (GL) developed a novel container ship design concept C-Dragon for the region, which was first introduced during the annual meeting of the China Committee of GL in Shanghai.
C-Dragon's vertical line is 211.9 meters long, 37.3 meters wide and has a cargo capacity of 3,736 TEU. C-Dragon is aimed at the actual operating conditions of short round trips and high port calls, aiming to outperform the old ship types currently used in the region in terms of fuel efficiency, port turnaround time and cargo capacity.
“The volume of container traffic in Asia will increase sharply. Ships participating in trade are usually sailing at a lower speed than design speed, and they are frequent in port. There are 13 ports on a typical North-South trade route.†GL Executive Vice President and Global Ship Type Director Jan- Olaf Probst said. “The C-Dragon concept is designed to reflect this, while meeting the market's strong demand for more energy efficient ship types as fuel prices continue to rise and new IMO regulations continue to be implemented.â€
Compared to the reference ship in this study, C-Dragon has a very high ratio of deck to total number of standard containers (2,376 TEU to 3,736 TEU) and fewer container rows. This special ship layout helps to reduce the duration of the port stay, because the more containers on the deck, the fewer the number of open hatches (purchasing supplies), and the fewer the number of rows, the crane (product library) Buying supply) The less you use. The port efficiency simulation study using GL prototype software (purchasing product library) proved that the average stay time of C-Dragon was reduced from 15 hours to 14 hours.
“C-Dragon's port turnaround time is faster than the opponent's ship, which helps to reduce the speed and save fuel costs without compromising cargo transport capacity,†explains Mr. Probst. “If it is a short-distance route and is linked to a port, the effect will be even more obvious.†For C-Dragon, its average speed dropped from 15.5 to 15 knots.
In order to reduce the speed and reduce fuel costs, C-Dragon's line type was optimized by GL's consulting company FutureShip. This optimization and design speed reduction resulted in a lower EEDI value than the IMO's 2025 reference value, and fuel consumption was also reduced by 30% compared to the current 4,250 TEU Panamax reference vessel.
Moreover, due to the wide-body design, the speed is reduced and ballast water is not required for most operating conditions (product library purchase). In the case of zero ballast water (purchased in the product warehouse), C-Dragon can bring the best DWT usage efficiency and excellent cargo capacity. For a single tank weighing 14 tons, only 14.8 dwt of the ship is required, which is almost 4 tons lower than the current 4,250 TEU Panamax design, which makes it possible to further increase the revenue.
