EU again launches antitrust investigation of pharmaceutical companies

The European Commission confirmed on the 3rd that its anti-monopoly law enforcement officers launched a surprise search on several pharmaceutical companies in the European Union on November 30 because these companies were suspected of impeding the listing of certain generic drugs and violated EU antitrust regulations.
The European Commission said that there is reason to believe that these companies may individually or conspired to engage in violations of EU antitrust regulations, in particular to prevent the listing of certain generic drugs. According to the usual practice, the European Commission did not announce the name of the company involved and other details.
The raid search is a preparatory phase of anti-monopoly procedures in the EU and it is intended to collect evidence to determine whether to launch an antitrust investigation.
In recent years, the European Commission has initiated special anti-monopoly governance for the pharmaceutical industry. The European Commission believes that there are indications that the competition in the EU pharmaceutical market is not sufficient. Some pharmaceutical companies try to prevent cheap generic drugs from entering the market for profiteering, which puts the patient’s economic burdens even further.
In November 2008, the European Commission conducted raids on several pharmaceutical companies in several EU member states.
It is estimated that Europeans spend about 400 euros per person per year on medicine, and the market size amounts to about 200 billion euros.
