Ceramic pipe on the surface of building can be cooled by water evaporation

If your city has a hot summer, you can thank those skyscrapers. High-rise buildings bring heat traps and create urban heat island effects. Creating a building that can cool the city is not out of reach. The exterior of the building consists of a series of pipes that evaporate rainwater and cool down. The system is called BioSkin and is used on the Osaki Electric Building in Tokyo, Japan. The building was opened in 2011 and was recently awarded the 2014 Architecture and Urban Habitat Innovation Award. Its purpose is to reduce the heat island effect.

The heat island effect is due to light entering the building and because of surface reflections, the energy is left in the building and then released to the surrounding area. This caused the area near the building to retain too much heat. BioSkin eliminates this thermal effect through water and collects rainwater through a palisade-like ceramic tube on the roof; the water evaporates through the porous tube under heat and removes heat. This method can reduce the building surface by 20 degrees Fahrenheit while reducing the surrounding 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This kind of building can help offset the urban heat island effect in urban neighborhoods. The prototype of the building is based on the traditional practice of watering streets.
